For years, I thought the purpose of a website was to explain what a business does.Now I think it's something quite different.Its job is to answer enough questions that a prospective customer no longer needs a sales call to understand whether they're in the right place.That doesn't mean every sale should happen online, or that sales teams become unnecessary. Some decisions will always require conversation.But the role of a website isn't to create questions.It's to remove them.<h2>Every unanswered question creates friction </h2>Think about the last time you bought something significant.Perhaps it was software, a service or a high-value purchase.At every stage, you were probably asking yourself questions.<ul><li>Is this right for me?</li><li>Can I trust this company?</li><li>How does this actually work?</li><li>Is it worth the investment?</li><li>What happens next? </li></ul>Every question introduces uncertainty.And uncertainty slows decisions.The businesses that communicate most effectively aren't necessarily those with the best products. They're often the ones that reduce uncertainty more quickly than their competitors.<h2>Sales shouldn't explain the basics </h2>One pattern I've noticed is that sales teams often answer the same questions repeatedly.Not because customers aren't listening.Because the website never answered them in the first place.If every introductory call begins with twenty minutes explaining what the business does, who it's for and how the process works, the website isn't supporting the sales team.It's creating work for them.The best sales conversations I've seen don't focus on explaining the business.They focus on understanding the customer.That's a much better use of everyone's time.<h2>Clarity builds confidence </h2>When I work on websites, I rarely start by thinking about design.I start by thinking about confidence.What does someone need to know before they feel comfortable taking the next step?<ul><li>Sometimes that's a clearer explanation of the service.</li><li>Sometimes it's customer stories.</li><li>Sometimes it's showing the process.</li><li>Sometimes it's simply removing jargon.</li></ul>Every business is different, but the objective is always the same.Help people understand enough that moving forward feels like the obvious next step.<h2>Simplicity is harder than it looks </h2>There's a temptation to tell people everything.<ul><li>Every service.</li><li>Every feature.</li><li>Every capability.</li></ul>The result is often a website that says a lot but communicates very little.The best websites I've worked on have usually involved removing content rather than adding it.Not because the information wasn't valuable, but because clarity comes from prioritisation.People don't need to know everything.They need to know the right things, in the right order. Don't fall into the trap of trying to appeal to everyone. It's about getting every potential customer into a sales funnel and providing content and information in a clear logical order.<h2>A useful exercise </h2>If I were reviewing a website tomorrow, I'd ask one simple question.What are the five questions your sales team answers on almost every call?If those questions aren't already answered naturally throughout your website, you've found an opportunity.Not just to improve your website.But to improve the entire buying experience.<h2>Final thought </h2>A website shouldn't exist to tell people how good your business is.It should help the right people reach a decision with confidence.<ol><li>Sometimes that decision is to get in touch.</li><li>Sometimes it's to buy.</li><li>Sometimes it's to realise you're not the right fit.</li></ol>All three outcomes are valuable.Because the goal isn't to generate more conversations.It's to ensure that when conversations do happen, they're about solving the customer's problem—not explaining yours.

We need more marketing."</h2>It's one of the most common conclusions businesses arrive at when growth slows.Sometimes they're right.Often they aren't.After working across technology, eCommerce, membership organisations and professional services, I've found that marketing is frequently where the symptoms appear—but rarely where the underlying problem begins.When enquiries fall, marketing gets the blame.When sales slow, marketing is expected to generate more leads.When customers don't engage, marketing is asked to communicate more effectively.The assumption is understandable. Marketing is visible. It's measurable. It's relatively easy to change.But the question I always come back to is much simpler:What is actually stopping customers from saying yes?More often than not, the answer has very little to do with marketing.<h2>Clarity beats visibility </h2>Businesses often believe they have a visibility problem.They invest in advertising, content, social media or SEO in the hope that reaching more people will create more customers.Sometimes it does.But increasing traffic simply increases the number of people experiencing the same friction.If your proposition is unclear, your website creates uncertainty or your customer journey introduces unnecessary complexity, more traffic rarely solves the problem. It simply exposes it to a larger audience.I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked to improve marketing performance, only to discover the real issue lay elsewhere.Sometimes customers didn't understand the offer.Sometimes internal processes created unnecessary delays.Sometimes sales teams were repeatedly answering questions that should already have been addressed.Marketing wasn't the problem.It was simply the first place the symptoms became visible.<h2>Businesses grow when systems work together </h2>One of the biggest shifts in my own thinking has been recognising that growth is rarely owned by a single department.Marketing, sales, operations, customer experience and product all contribute to the same outcome.If one of those areas breaks down, the others have to compensate.I've worked on projects where improving onboarding had a greater commercial impact than launching a new campaign and increasing website traffic.I've seen operational improvements increase customer satisfaction without changing any marketing activity at all, leading to increased customer lifetime value.I've also seen beautifully executed campaigns fail because the customer experience couldn't deliver on the promise.That's why I increasingly think of growth as a systems problem rather than a marketing problem.<h2>Ask a different question </h2>Whenever I start working with a business, I try not to ask:"How can we generate more leads?"Instead, I ask questions like:<ul><li>What makes customers hesitate?</li><li>Where does confusion appear?</li><li>What objections keep coming up?</li><li>Which conversations are repeated over and over again?</li><li>What assumptions are we making about what customers understand? </li></ul>Those questions usually reveal opportunities that no amount of additional marketing spend would uncover.<h2>Growth follows confidence </h2>Customers don't make decisions because they've seen another advert.They make decisions when they feel confident.Confident they understand the product.Confident they'll receive value.Confident they're making the right choice.Everything a business does should contribute to building that confidence.Marketing plays an important role, but so do operations, customer service, onboarding, communication and product experience.Growth isn't created by one function.It's created when every part of the business reduces uncertainty.<h2>A final thought </h2>Before increasing your marketing budget, ask yourself one question.If we doubled our website traffic tomorrow, would significantly more people become customers?If the answer isn't an immediate yes, your biggest opportunity probably isn't attracting more visitors.It's making it easier for the right customers to say yes.And that's a business challenge long before it becomes a marketing one.

For a long time, I described myself as a marketer.It made sense. My career has been built around marketing roles, leading campaigns, launching products, developing brands and driving growth.But over the last few years I've realised that marketing isn't actually the thing that motivates me.Solving business problems is.Marketing has simply become the toolkit I've developed to do it.Looking back across every role I've held, the pattern is surprisingly consistent. The challenge has rarely been "How do we get more leads?"Instead, it's been questions like:<ul><li>Why isn't the business growing?</li><li>Why aren't customers engaging?</li><li>Why are sales struggling to convert?</li><li>Why doesn't the website explain what the business actually does?</li><li>Why are different teams pulling in different directions? </li></ul>Those aren't marketing questions.They're business questions.And more often than not, the answer isn't another campaign.<h2>The problem behind the problem</h2>One of the biggest lessons I've learnt is that the obvious problem usually isn't the real one.A business thinks it needs more traffic.Often it needs a clearer proposition.Another thinks it needs more leads.Often it needs a better customer journey.Sometimes marketing gets blamed for poor sales.The reality is that customers are confused long before they speak to sales.I've seen this across membership organisations, technology businesses, ecommerce brands and professional services.Different industries - remarkably similar problems.<h2>Marketing is one part of the system</h2>The older I get, the less I see marketing as a standalone function within a business.Growth happens when marketing, operations, customer experience, sales and product all work together.If one of those areas is weak, marketing can only do so much.That's why some of the projects I've enjoyed most have involved redesigning processes, improving onboarding, refining propositions or simplifying customer journeys.None of those activities sit neatly inside "marketing."But they all influence growth.<h2>My approach </h2>Whenever I join a business, I ask the same questions.<ol><li>What is stopping customers from succeeding?</li><li>Where is unnecessary complexity?</li><li>What assumptions are we making?</li><li>What evidence do we actually have?</li><li>Only then do I think about channels, campaigns or content.</li></ol>Because clarity scales.Complexity doesn't.<h2>Closing </h2>Today, I still work in marketing.I just think about it differently.For me, marketing isn't the objective.Helping businesses remove the barriers stopping them growing is.Marketing is simply one of the ways I do that.
